Smart Pet Doors

Stop Being A Pet Butler

I have been looking into a way to stop being a slave to the pet ‘door game’. We really love our fur-babies, but who really has time to be a butler? These smart pet doors end the game of ‘Are you going out or not?’ And at the same time, they take out the worry that raccoons, squirrels, or the neighborhood cat burglar will slip through uninvited. And I am pleasantly surprised at what the world of pet tech is beginning to offer.

Types of Smart Pet Doors On Offer

During my research, I found three major types of smart pet doors. The first and least expensive is a locking door. These doors can be lock in positions ranging from your pet cannot get out to free movement either way.

The second is RFID, which recognizes your pet either by the identification chip. It can be the chip implanted in the animal for ID. If the animal is not chipped, there are collars with a chip for your pet to wear. These doors are good, and take out the need to be a butler holding the door open while your pet makes up its mind. And takes away the frustration when they decide to not go after you have been standing there for five minutes.

The third type of smart pet door that I found was one that used pet facial recognition. Since these do not rely on a chip, there is no need for a special chipped collar.

Some Advantages:

Both types of recognition doors can have similar advantages. The weatherproofing is better than a standard pet door. It is a necessary feature because of the electronics needed for either choice.

  • Some will automatically open as soon as it senses your pet coming near. That will help encourage pets that are shy about pushing through the physical part of the door.
  • Many will lock behind your pet after it enters.
  • At least one has the capability of sensing when your pet is still within the door. It will not close until the space is clear. This helps make pinched tails and paws a thing of the past.
  • Since the doors are dependent on chips or facial recognition, it will bar the entrance of unwanted animals.
  • They can lock automatically after your pet comes in.
  • Most of them will hook up to your smartphone. You will be able to see what your pet is up to while you are not at home.
  • If there is some reason you do not want your pet out, you can manually lock it to prevent your fur-baby from going out.
  • They can be programmable to keep some of your animals in. If you have more than one animal and want to keep one indoors this is a good way.

The Cost of These Smart Doors?

The least expensive of these smart doors is the locking door. They can start at around 55 dollars, and go up. Because of the lack of electronics, these doors will not cost a huge amount to install. From there, the electronic smart doors start at around one hundred dollars and can dramatically go up in cost from there. That can be a drawback of these doors. It becomes a balance of what you want from the door and how big of a door you need.
